Ayurveda, an ancient system of Indian medicine, has long recognized the importance of immunity. In Ayurvedic terminology, “Vyadhi-kshmatva” refers to immunity. Where “Vyadhi” means disease or illness, and “Kshamatva” means to resist or overcome. Therefore, “Vyadhi-kshmatva” essentially refers to the ability of the body to resist or overcome diseases or illnesses in Ayurveda.
According to Ayurveda, the concept of “Ojas” represents an optimal state of health and is closely related to immunity.
Ayurveda defines three types of immunity, known as “Trividha Bala,”. These three types of immunity (Vyadhi-kshmatva) are:
Sahaja Bala (genetic and inborn resistance): Sahaja Bala is the innate or natural immunity that a person is born with.
Kalaja Bala (Seasonal or Acquired Immunity): Kalaja Bala is an acquired immunity that develops over time through the seasons and is influenced by factors such as diet, lifestyle, and environmental changes.
Yuktikrit Bala (Immunity developed through conscious effort): This immunity can be consciously developed through specific efforts and practices.
Building a Healthy Immune System With Ayurveda
Ayurveda emphasizes a holistic approach that includes diet, lifestyle, and herbal remedies to enhance immune function.
Here’s an Ayurvedic guide to help you enhance immunity.
Support Immunity with Balanced Diet: Focus on a wholesome, balanced diet that includes fresh, organic, and seasonal foods. Emphasize foods that nourish all six tastes (sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent) to satisfy the body’s nutritional needs.
Mindful Eating: Eat in a calm and peaceful environment, free from distractions. Be present while eating to enhance the nourishment derived from your meals.
Herbs and Spices: Certain Ayurvedic herbs and spices are known to boost immunity. Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Tulsi (Holy Basil) are examples of adaptogenic herbs that can help strengthen immunity. Use spices like cinnamon, turmeric, cardamom, and ginger in cooking.
Prioritize quality sleep: Get sufficient, high-quality sleep each night. Aim for 7-8 hours of uninterrupted rest to allow the body to replenish immunity.
Regular exercise: Engage in regular, moderate exercise that aligns with your constitution (Prakriti). Avoid excessive or overly strenuous workouts, as they can deplete immunity.
Daily routine (Dinacharya): Follow a daily routine that aligns with your constitution and promotes balance. Include practices like oil pulling, tongue scraping, and self-massage (Abhyanga) in your daily routine.
Supportive mindfulness practices: There are a number of subtle Mindfulness Practices in the Ayurvedic tradition. Practice Mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, Pranayama, and yoga to cultivate presence, cleanse the nadis, relieve stress, and support the quality of immunity.
Herbal infusions and formulations: Enjoy immune-boosting herbal teas including ginger, cumin, fennel, coriander, and cardamom. These herbs are also known as Tridoshic, generally considered safe and balancing for all three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapa).
Ayurveda teaches us that strong immunity is considered a natural outcome of good health that results from the harmonious functioning of Agni, a nourishing diet, a supportive lifestyle, and a balanced nervous system.
